Sitting Arrangements-Linear and Circular
Sitting arrangement is one of the popular topics of LRDI section for any competitive exam. The best thing about this topic is that you don’t need to apply any out of the box thinking but to process and write down all the information that is given to solve the questions. Sometimes you will feel that given information is not enough to complete the arrangements but remember your job is to solve the questions not to complete the arrangement.
Here I am giving you some sets of linear and circular arrangements, try to solve them and then match your answers with the given solution.
Direction for question number 1 to 4: Four couples A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H are sitting together on a bench facing towards north not necessarily in the same order. It is also known that
I. A,C,E,G are females who are sitting immediate left of their husbands.
II. G is sitting immediate right of H who is sitting three places away to the left of C.
III. A is sitting five places to the left of B who is sitting 3rd from extreme right.
1. How many such arrangements are possible?
a. 1
b. 2
c. 3
d. 4
Solution:
It is given that wives are immediate left of their husbands that means females are sitting on positions 1,3,5,7 and males are sitting on positions 2,4,6,8, from left to right.
Let’s start with the statement 3:
A _ _ _ _ B _ _
Now using statement 2 we will have 2 different arrangements:
A H G _ C B _ _ and A _ _ H G B C _
Now E has only one position left to sit in both arrangements:
A H G _ C B E _ and A _ E H G B C _
Now D and F has 2 positions to sit in both the arrangements.
Hence total 4 arrangements are possible.
2. Which of these are husband and wife?
a. A-H
b. B-E
c. G-B
d. Cannot be determined
Solution: In all the four possible arrangements no couple can be recognized.
3. If F is the husband of G then who is the wife of B?
a. C
b. G
c. A
d. E
Solution: If F is the husband of G then the arrangement will be A H G F C B E D.
Hence, C is the wife of B.
4. If C is immediate left of D ten who of these are sitting adjacent to each other?
a. AH
b. BE
c. GF
d. FE
Solution: If C is immediate left of D then arrangement will be A F E H G B C D.
Hence, F and E are sitting are adjacent to each other.
Direction for questions 5 to 8: In a prize distribution ceremony, seven girls Rekha, Sonam, Sristi, Charu, Neha, Anshu and Monilla are standing in a row facing in the same direction.
I. Rekha is standing with her friends Neha and Sonam.
II. Monilla does not support Anshu and so not standing with her.
III. Charu knows only Sristi and so she is adjacent to her only.
IV. Anshu support Sonam and Sristi and is standing adjacent to both.
5. Who is standing in the middle of all the girls?
a. Neha
b. Sristi
c. Sonam
d. Rekha
Solution: In the statement III it is given that Charu is adjacent to Sristi only that means Charu is one of the extremes left or right, also from statement IV Anshu is adjacent to Sristi.
Possible arrangements are (left to right):
Charu-Sristi-Anshu-Sonam-Rekha-Neha-Monilla
Monilla-Neha-Rekha-Sonam-Anshu-Sristi-Charu
As we can see in both the cases Sonam is in the middle.
6. If Charu is at the extreme left who is to the left of Monilla?

Solution: If Charu is at the extreme left then arrangement will be:
Charu-Sristi-Anshu-Sonam-Rekha-Neha-Monilla
Hence, Neha is to the left of Monilla

In both the possible arrangements Anshu and Monilla are at the extreme ends.

Solution: Neha is standing between Rekha and Monilla.
Directions for Questions 9 to 12: Six most popular world leaders Trump, Markel, Cameron, Hollande, Putin and Modi are from six different countries America, Germany, England, France, Russia and India respectively who supportsdifferent countries among America, Germany, England, France, Russia and India not necessarily in the same order are sitting around a circular table facing towards the centre.
It is also known that:
I. Trump who supports India is sitting opposite to the leader who supports America.
II. The one who supports Russia is not adjacent to the one who supportsAmerica or England.
III. Cameron is sitting three places to the left of Modi while Putin is sitting three places to the right of Markel.

Solution: As there are 8 friends sitting around the table angle made by any two adjacent friends on the centre =45 degrees.
Now, Angle CAD =angle EAD = 45 and Angle ACD = 90 that mean A and D are opposite to each other.
Also from statement III, It is known that F is between E and D and B is sitting left of C.
Directions for questions 21 to 24: A, B, C, D, E, F and G are sitting on a mountain and all of them are facing south.
II. D is immediate left of C.
III. B is at an extreme end and has E on left as his neighbour.
IV. C is between E and F.
V. D is sitting third from the east end.
