Q. Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your application. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you a position in our local government office for the summer. As you know, funding for summer jobs is limited, and it is impossible for us to offer jobs to all those who want them. Consequently, we are forced to reject many highly qualified applicants.

Which of the following can be inferred from the letter?

A. The number of applicants for summer jobs in the government office exceeded the number of summer jobs available.

B. The applicant who received the letter was considered highly qualified.

C. Very little funding was available for summer jobs in the government office.

D. The application of the person who received the letter was considered carefully before being rejected.

The answer is A. It must be true for it to be impossible for the government office to offer jobs to all those who want them. Imagine the other way round i.e. had the applicants for the job been fewer than or even equal to the number of jobs at the government office, then why would it be impossible for the government office to offer jobs to all those who want them? The only situation in which it becomes impossible for the government office to offer jobs to all the applicants is when the applicants exceed the number of jobs.

The cost of producing radios in Country Q is ten percent less than the cost of producing radios in Country Y. Even after transportation fees and tariff charges are added, it is still cheaper for a company to import radios from Country Q to Country Y than to produce radios in Country Y.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following assertions?

Premise- The cost of producing radios in Q is 10% less than the cost of producing radios in Y.

Conclusion- Even after transportation fees and tariff charges are added, it is still cheaper for a company to import radios from Country Q to Country Y than to produce radios in Country Y.

Assumptions- Transportation fees and tariff charges for importing a radio from Q to Y is less than 10% of the cost of producing radios in country Y.

(Y-Q)/Y*100=10. So, if  Y=100, Q=90. Transportation fees and tariff charges for importing a radio from Q to Y is less than 10. (Y= cost of producing radios in country Y; Q= cost of producing radios in country Q)

A. Labor cost is a foreign variable.

B. Manufacturing jobs is a foreign variable.

C. This can be necessarily derived from the argument. 

D. This is a possibility, not a logical necessity.

E. Manufacturing cost is a foreign variable.

Sir, how do we eliminate option C in the above options? 

In inference based questions, the idea is to read every line and try to represent it in either another language OR using figures and shorthand i.e. you basically translate the stuff.

Option C, which uses the word 'endemic' talks about something totally different from what the last line of the argument expresses. 

The last line of the argument merely states that at 'Haw... almost all birds were endemic, while at GB only one bird was endemic'. Now read Option C. Does it have ANY bearing with what we have just discussed?
