Puzzle of the Day : 53
Four friends, who work in different departments of a college, made a statement each as given below. It is known that two of them always speak the truth and the rest two always tell a lie.
Ankit: Vineet works in Commerce department. Dinesh works in Mathematics department.
Vineet: Shivam works in Mathematics department. Ankit works in English department.
Shivam: Ankit works in Commerce department. I work in Science department.
Dinesh: Neither Ankit nor Shivam works in Mathematics department. I work in English department
Who works in the Mathematics department?
1. Ankit
2. Vineet
3. Shivam
4. Dinesh
Let Ankit, Vineet, Shivam and Dinesh be represented as A, B, C and D respectively. From the statements made by (A, B), it can be concluded that at most one of them can speak the truth. The same conclusion can be made for (A, C) and (B, C). Therefore, we can conclude that D always speaks the truth and A and B always tell a lie. Further analysis leads to the final conclusions as given below:
Ankit – Commerce department
Vineet – Mathematics department
Shivam – Science department
Dinesh – English department
