In the diagram, ∠CAB = 90º. Point D is on AB and point E is on AC so that AB = AC = DE , BD = 9 , EC = 8 . Determine the length of DE.

    Let AB=AC=DE= z
    z= y+8=x+9
    So, y=x+1

    z^2=x^2+y^2
    Substitute y
    z^2= 2x^2+2x+1…(1)

    2z^2= (y+8)^2 + (x+9)^2
    Substitute y
    z^2= 34x+161….(2)

    On solving (1) and (2)
    z=29
