Verbal Question of the Day: 14
Out of Context
Five sentences related to a topic are given below. Four of them can be put together to form a meaningful and coherent short paragraph. Identify the odd one out. Choose its number as your answer and key it in.
1. The recent volatility in cryptocurrency markets has only emboldened policymakers around the world to take a more skeptical view of the trade.
2. A European Parliament-commissioned study on the issue came to the conclusion this month that regulators should not ban virtual currencies.
3. India is going a step further than most countries in cracking down on peer-to-peer money.
4. In the legal challenge before India’s Supreme Court, the RBI told the top court that India’s existing law mandates coins to be made of metal or exist in physical form, and stamped by the government.
5. The RBI, the nation’s main financial regulator, is defending its turf for managing electronic money and also trying to cut off an avenue for crimes using digital coins.
The answer is option 4 as the other sentences form a sequence-1352.
Hi Shubhra!
Perhaps you’d like to consider looking for a sentence that contains a thematic difference. A sentence that incorporates a robust differentiating factor is always the preferred answer in out of context questions.
Shubhra, I’m afraid 4. was an incorrect option. See my explanation to the answer below.

Second one on the other hand shows some European parliament research.
Hi Vartika! If you’ll look again carefully, you’ll notice option 1. also talks of how virtual currencies are being viewed around the world. It is not India-specific.

Okay I saw your explanation. I am not able to get the exact answer. Some places you have said Option 2 is correct. While in your explanation it’s 4.
You’re right, Vartika. The answer is, in fact, 2. In my earlier comment to you, I was indicating the flaw in your reasoning for choosing 2.
I have edited my answer in the answer explanation below, so it now shows the correct answer option to be 2. Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy 🙂
Thanks for clearing.
Happy to have helped 🙂
Odd one out – option 4
Sequence – 1235
That’s not the right option, Abhipri. The preferred approach in solving out of context questions is to look for a sentence that is thematically different, one that contains a robust differentiating factor.

Also, take a shot at today’s question:

The answer is 2.
Explanation: This is the only statement that does not speak for the banning of virtual currencies.
The rest of the statements give reasons or imply support for the banning of virtual currencies.
How are other options speaking of banning of virtual currencies?
Hi Surbhi. There are excerpts in each of the other sentences that imply a lack of support for regularizing virtual currencies- ’emboldened policymakers around the world to take a more skeptical view of the cryptocurrency markets’, ‘cracking down on peer-to-peer money’, ‘India’s existing law mandates coins to be made of metal or exist in physical form’, ‘defending its turf and trying to cut off an avenue for crimes using digital coins’.
Option 2
Yes, well done Samyak 🙂
Option 2
Correct, Akanksha 🙂
