Verbal Question of the Day: 27
CR- Conclusion
Q. Maybe soccer fans are fine with their team losing, so long as it wasn’t expected to win? Researchers found that a loss had a more severe negative impact on people’s happiness when their team was expected to win than when it was expected to lose. A loss, even if it was anticipated, made people suffer.
Which of the following conclusions can be drawn from the paragraph above?
A. Football fans are not fine with their team losing, even if the loss was anticipated.
B. Football has the capacity to make fans a lot less happy.
C. Football fans’ feelings do not completely adapt to expectations of their team’s win.
D. Football fans should not make an emotional investment in their team.

C
Reason
A- The fans are fine with team loosing , it is written in passage that they are more unhappy when the loss is unexpected it means they are okay or less sad when loss expected so by using , “okay” in place of happy the statement makes sense.
So we can say they are okay with team loosing when expected.
B- The fans are sad when team looses not when football is played so it is not correct conclusion
D- There is an assumption that fans are defined as the ones who support their teams so not very good inference as it is no where mentioned that not investing will be happy.
So answer c- most appropriate as it states that the fans feelings are completely adaptable to team’s victory.
That’s the correct answer, Mayank!

The answer is C. The paragraph is about whether football fans’ feelings correspond to their expectations.
Further explanation:
A. This restates the premise mentioned in the paragraph.
B. This is beyond the scope of the paragraph. It is not about football making people unhappy.
D. This is also beyond the purview of the paragraph.
Sir,I couldn’t understand the extract and hence the answer.
Hi Shubhra, this paragraph is about football fans’ feelings after a match in relation to the expectations that they had of the match’s outcome. According to the paragraph, football fans felt extremely unhappy when their team lost, after they had expected it to win. They felt less unhappy, but unhappy all the same, even when their team was expected to lose and it lost.
I hope you feel confident of solving the question now. 🙂
