  1. Let’s say you’re a crack investment banker who’s been presented with two opportunities.
  2. Would you still bet on them?
  3. Both companies — one engaged in providing maps to fire insurers to help them assess underwriting risks, the other, a farm equipment maker specialising in windmills — were going great guns a few decades ago, but are well past their prime today.
  4. This has led to a slide in their revenues and profits.
  5. Sanborn Map Company has been steadily yielding its insurance business to carding, a new technology based on algorithmic calculations, while Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company is losing out to electrical pumps.

In statements 5 and 3 the companies are being explained about. Then in statement 4 a financial fact is presented. Following it with the assumption of being an investor, the parajumble is concluded with a question about investing.

They’re starting off the paragraph introducing the companies then their operations and how they’re losing profits . Thereafter , directing a question to us whether we would invest in either being an investor.

  4. 13542
The para can start either from 5or 1.
1 says two opportunities ,which means it can be any two.If it had been the two opportunities,it would have implied that the two opportunities should be mentioned before 1.Thus 1 begins the para.3 explains the 2 opportunities and tells both have been running in losses these days.5 finally mentions the name and tells the reason for losses.4 talks about the consequent fall in revenue in business.the final statement 2 follows because it asks despite everything would you still bet on these?

  5. TG.Prabhat

    The answer is 13542.
1 introduces the paragraph to be a presentation of two investment opportunities.
3, which starts with ‘Both companies’, follows 1 by expanding on the ‘two opportunities’.
5 succeeds 3 since it elaborates on why both the companies are well past their prime today.
4 is the next sentence as it gives the consequence of the increased competition faced by the two companies.
2 is a rhetorical question and works best as the concluding sentence.

Today’s question is an easy one- http://tathagat.mba/verbal-question-of-the-day-37/

Now, for the trivia- Warren Buffet, the Sage of Omaha, invested profitably in both the companies! 35% of his partnership’s net assets in Sanborn, and a 70% ownership stake in Dempster Mill Manufacturing.

I have a doubt that first we will give the description of the companies right ? which is mentioned in 5th point and then tell the opportunities that is point 3 ??

      1. TG.Prabhat

Hi Asma, the description of the businesses is actually in sentence 3, which is of primary relevance when an investment opportunity is presented. Hence, 3 should ideally succeed sentence 1. Sentence 5 gives the names of the companies along with information about their performance in relation to the competitive environment. It supports the claim made in sentence 3. Sentence 4 gives the result of their performance. Thus, sentence 4 must be immediately after sentence 5.
